What’s Happening in Vancouver This October? Two Cultural Events to Put on Your Calendar

by Amy Leong

Looking for things to do in Vancouver this October? Two cultural festivals deserve a spot on your calendar: the Vancouver International Film Festival and the Vancouver Writers Fest.

Whether you are planning a date, catching up with friends or looking for a reason to break your usual routine, these events offer a chance to experience a different side of the city.

Vancouver International Film Festival: October 1–11, 2026

The Vancouver International Film Festival runs October 1–11, with a program that includes international cinema, live performances, talks and industry sessions.

The appeal is discovery. Choose a film you might not ordinarily watch, explore a different perspective or look for a conversation that takes you behind the scenes of filmmaking.

For a social outing, invite a friend and choose a screening together. Leave time afterward to compare notes. Sometimes the conversation a film starts is the most memorable part of the evening.

Plan your visit: Browse by your interests and check the screening location before booking. Events take place at different venues, so confirm the address, start time and ticket availability for your selection.

Vancouver Writers Fest: October 18–25, 2026

Later in the month, the Vancouver Writers Fest brings local and international authors together for readings, conversations and events.

You do not need to belong to a book club to enjoy it. Start with a topic that catches your attention or an author whose work you have been meaning to explore. A live conversation can offer a fresh way into a story, an idea or a perspective you have not considered.

The festival’s Granville Island setting also makes it an appealing afternoon or evening outing. Choose a session, invite someone who shares your curiosity and give yourself time to enjoy the area around your event.

Plan your visit: Review the event descriptions rather than choosing by author name alone. Check the venue, format and ticket details for each session.

Make a Plan to Experience Vancouver This Fall

An international film festival at the beginning of October and a literary festival later in the month give you two distinct ways to engage with Vancouver’s cultural life.

Our suggestion: choose one event that feels familiar and another that takes you somewhere new. Make a plan with a friend, put it in the calendar and let the city give you something to talk about.
